Nov 25: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

“Women’s activists have marked November 25 as a day against violence since 1981. On December 171999, the United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Resolution 54/134). The UN invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designated to raise public awareness of the problem on this day as an international observance. Women around the world are subject to rapedomestic violence and other forms of violence, and the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden.

This date came from the brutal assassination in 1960, of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, on orders of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).

There is more information about the history of this day, and UN publications relating to violence against women, at the UN’s Dag Hammarskjöld Library. The UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) also has a regular observance of the day, and offers suggestions for others to observe it.” (source: Wikipedia)

I am not sure if this day has been mentioned in any way in Romania in this past week (I’ve been in Madrid, so kind of out of touch with what was going on back home), but I know that Spain has made sure that its people noticed the meaning of November 25 and knew exactly what is was all about. I’ve only noticed the outdoor messages, but I am sure that they had more non profit marketing going on than the metro posters I’ve seen:

Outdoor poster in the Madrid Metro stations

Outdoor poster in the Madrid Metro stations saying: "What is happening within a house it doesn't mean it is not happening. Denounce violence. November 25 - International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women"

Eu am vazut un sticker in fata scarilor de la metrou, pe jos – in toate statiile prin care am trecut. Asta e tot ce mi-a sarit in ochi.

Da, se pare ca a fost o campanie si la noi, initiata de UNFPA, urmata de 16 zile de activism impotriva violentei de gen (intre 25 nov si 10 dec, cand se sarbatoreste ziua internationala a drepturilor omului):
